Theme VII: Portraits, “Free Frame”

By Connor Peters

At birth, we are free.
We are free of boundaries,
of knowledge,
of regrets.
As we grow, we acquire.
We acquire boundaries.
We acquire knowledge.
We acquire regrets.
As we grow, we solidify.
Our boundaries turn into hurdles.
Our knowledge turns into a crutch.
Our regrets turn into prejudice.
As our boundaries, knowledge and regrets
solidify,
we build a frame around our lives.
Whether the frame is gilded,
gold-crusted or wooden,
our frame is only as lovely,
or as ugly, as our
frame of reference.
